By Umeorah Chukwuma D eputy National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Nwaeze Onu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately halt the proposed tax reform bill currently before the National Assembly. He described the bill as ill-timed, warning that it would worsen the economic hardship faced by Nigerians. “The President has to urgently halt the tax reform bill before the National Assembly considering the precarious state of the economy today and how people pay through their nose for daily bread.

The tax reform bill should be dropped, and let there be wider consultation of the stakeholders,” Onu stated in his New Year message. He also criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government for allegedly stifling opposition parties, describing such actions as detrimental to democracy. Onu urged Nigerians to remain optimistic and united to overcome the country’s challenges.

He emphasised that unity was essential for national progress, saying, “Hope is the only gateway to overcome the hardship in the country. The new year will bring resurgence.” He advised Governor Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State to reduce the cost of governance and prioritize education.

“There’s a need to reduce the cost of governance in the state. The funds coming into the state from the federation account have improved. Instead of channelling it into the purchase of exotic vehicles, it should be used to sustain a functional educational system like the Dr.

Sam Egwu administration did,” he said.
