Pune: A 42-year-old employee of a private company from Chinchwad became the latest victim of an online share trading fraud and lost Rs 76.11 lakh after crooks offered him good returns if he invested through them between Nov and Dec last year. After realising he was being duped, the victim lodged a complaint with the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police on Wednesday.

An officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad cybercrime police said the victim came into contact with the crooks through a social media platform. They offered him good returns on his investments in the share market through them. The crooks then added him to a group of investors on a mobile messenger app.

"The conmen also shared URL links of different training videos for trading into the stock market," the officer said. He said under the pretext of investing in block trading and IPOs, the crooks made him transfer Rs 76.11 lakh to different bank accounts between Nov 10 and Dec 31 last year.

"Whenever the victim tried to withdraw his money, the crooks used to cite some or the other reason and demanded more money from him," he said. The officer said the victim realised he was being duped and stopped responding to them. "We have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Information and Technology Act and sought details of the transactions from the complainant's bank," the officer said.
