MANILA, Philippines – A once glorious UAAP women’s volleyball rivalry now continues to be a one-sided streak of dominance as the La Salle Lady Spikers rolled to their 15th straight win over the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, March 12. With their third straight win in the bag after a 19-year-worst 1-2 start , the Lady Spikers are now at 4-2 and back knocking on the door of the top two just behind undefeated NU (6-0) and UST (5-1), while the shorthanded Blue Eagles, who are down three key players, fell to their fourth straight loss at 1-5. Star spikers Shevana Laput and Angel Canino once again showed up with flying colors, the former posting a UAAP career-high 25 points on 19 attacks, 3 blocks, and 3 aces, while the latter backstopped with 17 points on 13 hits and 4 rejections.

Mikole Reyes rounded out the winning offense with 20 excellent sets as Alleiah Malaluan added 12 points on 9 attacks and 3 blocks. Stunned by a third-set meltdown after a masterful first two frames, La Salle got up the floor slowly in the fourth, initially going down 6-2 before finally retaking a 15-14 advantage in the latter half of the set. With Ateneo making the fatal flaw of letting its rival regain its fire, the Lady Spikers cobbled together a pivotal 7-1 charge from down 14-13 to create a comfortable 20-15 cushion that it never relinquished.

Errors certainly didn’t help the Blue Eagles’ cause as they bowed out for good with one last Amie Provido block on Ateneo captain Lyann de Guzman for the win. De Guzman paced the loss with 16 points, while fellow veteran AC Miner scored 13. – Rappler.
