One of Jackie and Shadow's three chicks appears to have gone missing. Only two were visible during the first and second feedings Friday morning as snow continued to coat Big Bear’s famous bald eagle nest. "We were only able to see two chicks during the first feeding so we are not sure what is going on," Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that manages the popular YouTube livestream, said in a statement to NBC4 .
"Please hold positive thoughts as we wait to be updated by nature." Cali Condor, a moderator and administrator of the group, wrote that they’re holding the eagle family in their hearts and sending love to the community worldwide. “We are viewing the everyday life of bald eagles,” Condor wrote in a YouTube comment.
“Sometimes our emotions override our curiosity. It’s OK to trust them when you need to and to make healthy decisions for yourself.” Weather has been the biggest risk for the young eaglets as their own waterproof feathers grow in.
The nest has been hit with a series of late winter storms this month, but the chicks had been able to stay safe snuggled under their parents. It’s unclear what happened to the third chick. Mama Jackie guarded the nest for most of the storm Thursday, and all three chicks were spotted taking bites of food during a break before bed time.
