Silicone sealant, the white waterproof lining found around showers or sinks, is notoriously difficult to keep clean due to its constant exposure to water. Black mould, which thrives in damp conditions , can be particularly problematic on silicone seal as it feeds off organic materials left behind by soap, shampoo, or other oily products. While many attempt to use bleach to combat mould , it's often ineffective and can damage the silicone because of its harshness.

However, Georgia Nunn from Silicone Direct has revealed a straightforward and effective method for removing mould from silicone using a common kitchen ingredient. Georgia explained: "Vinegar is a natural mould killer that unlike other substances does not contain any harmful chemicals." She highlighted that white vinegar is excellent for tackling mould as it contains acetic acid, which completely dissolves the spores.

Vinegar not only kills mould but also penetrates deep into the silicone sealant, ensuring all traces are removed without resorting to harsher chemical products, reports the Express . Before you start cleaning mould, it's crucial to wear the right gear. Wear a long-sleeved T-shirt, gloves, and if possible, a mask.

Georgia said: "You will need to wear a mask, gloves, and goggles in order to protect your skin, eyes and lungs from any airborne particles. It is important to avoid any direct contact with the mould and its spores, as they can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation." Once suitably attired, fill an empty spray bottle with white vinegar and douse the mouldy area generously.

Allow at least 15 minutes for the vinegar to penetrate and weaken the mould spores. Afterwards, create a thick paste by mixing baking soda with water and layer it over the vinegar-treated surface. Baking soda excels at dissolving grease, aiding in the removal of soap scum, and its mild abrasiveness assists the vinegar in dislodging mould from the silicone.

Scrub the sealant with an old toothbrush or bristled brush in circular motions, and the mould should come off immediately. Rinse the area with warm water, dry it thoroughly, and your silicone seal should now be spotless, ensuring a pristine bathroom free from black mould. To prevent future mould growth, dry the silicone seal after showering, and ventilate your bathroom by opening a window to reduce humidity.
