One more Nigerian nat’l held for meth peddling

Chennai: A Nigerian national, second so far and 12th to be held in connection with a Bengaluru-based Methamphetamine peddling cartel, was arrested by the city police on Sunday. Police suspect Phillip, 31, to be the mastermind of the cartel involved in the smuggling of Methamphetamine from abroad and selling it in small quantities to local peddlers and agents in Chennai. Police said the Arumbakkam police team have so far arrested 11 people – Jeevan, 39, Masthan, 45, Jagadeesan, 25, Satishkumar, 33, Viswanathan, 47, Deepakraj, 24, Siddharth, 25, Arul Kumar, 28, Antony Raj, 29, and Santhosh, 27, and a Nigerian national — for smuggling Methamphetamine from Bengaluru.

During inquiry, the arrested suspects mentioned the name of Phillip as key player. On Saturday, acting on a specific tip off, a police team led by inspectors Mohammad Safiullah and Balasubramanian nabbed Phillip. Police said the team maintained surveillance and tracked the movements of Philip.



During interrogation, Phillip told police that he placed orders and brought the drug from Nigeria by courier and by air. "We will interrogate him in police custody to trace other key suspects operating from abroad," said an officer. Philip was produced before a magistrate court in the city, and was remanded in judicial custody.
