A leader in Ghana’s parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has said that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) will now follow the proper legal rules when dealing with drug smuggling claims against a member of parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour. This news came from an interview on Joy FM, a radio station, on April 10, 2025.
Afenyo-Markin said that after talking with the NIB, they agreed to handle the situation using the correct legal and official ways. He said that the NIB had sent an official message to the Speaker of Parliament, and he stressed that it’s important to do things the right way. Afenyo-Markin asked people to be patient.
He said that people in power should remember to follow the rules and make sure justice is served, because their political jobs won’t last forever. “Let’s allow the correct process to happen. One day, you might not be in power anymore, and you’ll want the correct process to be followed.
That’s what I want to tell my fellow politicians,” he said. He also said that his group, the Minority, was worried about how the situation was being handled at first. They thought the NIB was trying to arrest the member of parliament without going through the proper steps in parliament.
Afenyo-Markin cleared up some rumors, saying that they weren’t trying to stop the police from doing their job. They just wanted the constitution and the correct procedures to be respected. He said that the NIB listened to their concerns and agreed to do things the right way.
In simple terms, there were accusations that a member of parliament was involved in drug smuggling. The NIB wanted to take action, but the Minority group in parliament said they weren’t following the correct rules. After some talks, the NIB agreed to follow the proper legal and parliamentary procedures.
