Times News Network Ludhiana: Amidst resounding chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya,” organisers of various Ganesh Mahotsav committees and residents bid farewell to their beloved deity after the 10-day festival of Ganesh Chaturthi . On Tuesday, people gathered along the banks of the Satluj river, Doraha river and Sidhwan canal for idol immersion . Even though some people had performed the immersion ceremony on Monday, the burgeoning crowds caused traffic jams along the water bodies.

Raman Jain, a shopkeeper from Madhopuri said that the 10 days of the festival were filled with happiness, hope and excitement. He observed that the festival, which was traditionally celebrated in Maharashtra, was now equally popular in the city. Deepak Kapur, a student from Sita Nagar, shared, “I thoroughly enjoyed the religious processions and idol immersion in the Satluj river, where we danced while bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha, eagerly anticipating his return next year.

” However, the immersion of numerous idols in the water is a cause for concern for environmentalists , who urged organisers to find alternative ways or opt for eco-friendly idols. Environmentalist Dr Amandeep Bains, clarified, “We do not oppose any religious rituals, but rivers are severely polluted these days, making it our responsibility to act accordingly.” He pointed out that a few organisers used idols made of harmful materials like POP, which do not dissolve in the water and suggested use of idols made of clay or wheat flour.

“This not only pollutes our rivers but also leads to idols getting stuck in various corners, which is disrespectful,” he added, urging the administration to ban such idol production practices.
