OLMSTED TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- The replacement of failing septic systems has been on Olmsted Township’s radar for decades. The next domino falling toward that end is the Fitch Road sanitary sewer extension and roadway improvement project. “This is something that trustees have talked about and advocated for many years,” Olmsted Township Trustee Riley A.

Alton said. “Considering Fitch Road is a county road, securing funding in order to make the project happen has been the biggest hurdle.” The project is estimated at $7.

4 million with Olmsted Township receiving $3.7 million from Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works, the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) and $2 million through the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) Member Community Infrastructure Program (MCIP). The contract is expected to be put out for bid later this year with a November start date.

The entire project -- which is currently being engineered -- is expected to be completed in late spring 2027. The scope of effort affects lateral connections for the 56 properties currently relying on septics beginning at the First Energy right-of-way with the installation of a new 18-inch sanitary sewer along the centerline of Fitch Road going north to Greenbrooke Drive. “It’s the infrastructure improvements that excites me the most because I hear from folks in the community that Fitch Road is really banged up,” he said.

“There are potholes all over the place. “Our service department does the best they can to patch Fitch Road but at a certain point, you’re putting band-aids on a gaping wound. It’s time to redo it comprehensively and in a way that can sustain the growth of the community without compromising the infrastructure.

” Also planned are roadway improvements, including resurfacing Fitch Road from its southern project limit to the North Olmsted border and the installation of a sidewalk along the west side of Fitch Road from the First Energy right-of-way to Cook Road. “The health and safety of our residents is our top priority, and this investment in our sanitary system and roadway will have a lasting positive impact on Olmsted Township,” said Trustee Tom Cole in a press release. “This is a culmination of work that Olmsted Township has been working towards for many years.

We’re thankful for all of the efforts we, in cooperation with Cuyahoga County Public Works, have made over the years have finally come to fruition,” said Trustee Lisa Zver in a press release. Asked if there are any other areas in the township earmarked for a project similar to that of the Fitch Road sanitary sewer extension and roadway improvement, Alton said, “No, this is definitely the big one.” Read more news from the Sun Post Herald here.
