The Winter Session of the parliament has witnessed uproar with both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) targeting the Congress for its alleged connection with Hungarian-American businessman George Soros and the Congress attacking the BJP for its alleged links with Indian businessman Gautam Adani. Amid this, a clip of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is going viral on social media. In the clip, Meloni speaks in Italian and states that her country will enact an "anti- Soros " law to stop businessmen from conducting their NGO activities in Italy.
People have claimed this to be the official stance of Italy as the current PM is saying so. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here .) Is the claim true?: No, the claim is misleading.
This video dates back to June 2018. At that time, the PM of Italy was Giuseppe Conte, and Meloni was part of the Opposition. ADVERTISEMENT REMOVE AD What we found: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
We came across the same video on Meloni's official X account from 4 June 2018 . It was uploaded with the title, "Soros is worried about Italy? Right! The anti-Soros law is coming." (translated from Italian to English) #Soros à ̈ preoccupato per lâItalia? Fa bene! In arrivo la legge anti-Soros.

Meloni was elected as the PM only in 2022 . We also found a video on View National Television Agency's YouTube channel from 2018. It noted Meloni's words which were, "If the Government does its job, as it will, the law of Fratelli d'Italia will be approved to prevent people like him (Soros) from financing NGOs, which favour irregular immigration because their goal is to weaken sovereign states and allow speculation to win.
" We discovered information regarding this video on the official site of Fratelli d'Italia in an article from June 2018. It was reported that Meloni announced her party Fratelli d'Italia was developing a bill against Soros to prevent NGOs that encourage illegal immigration. Additionally, we didn't find any recent statement from Meloni about introducing such a law in Italy.
