Old King Coal, a Modern Fairy Tale

On the orders of Baron Bowen, all in the kingdom were ruinously taxed to support his green-clad friends

O nce upon a time there was a quaint little country the world seemed to have passed by. On the throne was Old King Coal, who had once been a merry old soul but he was no longer happy. Prices had gone up so much he could no longer afford his fiddlers three.

Like his castles, he was ageing badly and increasingly lost in gloom. Castle Eraring, for instance, was in need of repair, with bits falling off the ramparts. To the south, Castle Yallourn was nothing but rubble and his subjects feared what would happen next.



They had been spoilt by the easy life and forgotten the benefits of his reign. Increasingly, charlatans clad mostly in green were preaching they knew how to change things for the better and all it would take was unfettered access to the pockets and purses of King Coal’s subjects. Princess Tricity was also unhappy.

Her prospects of finding a handsome prince looked dim and she was fearful the charlatans would empty the treasury and leave nothing for her dowry. Worse, she..
