Ohio's spring wildflower season is hitting its stride, with a burst of color sweeping across the state. According to the latest update from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources report, recent showers and mild temperatures have prompted a plethora of native flora to show off their petals, particularly in Southern Ohio, where species like the state-endangered golden star and blue-eyed mary have begun to peak. For nature enthusiasts, this means it's prime time to visit local state nature preserves, which are currently showcasing an array of blooming wildflowers.

For instance, South Region's Gladys Riley Golden-Star State Nature Preserve is seeing a stellar showing of its namesake flower. At the same time, other regional favorites include blue-eyed mary and yellow trout-lily. As the report details, however, some early spring bloomers have already taken a bow, leaving room for an array of new species to take center stage.

Moving north, Ohio's Central and Northern regions are not far behind, with a host of wildflowers making their grand debut. In Central Ohio, blooms such as Dutchman's breeches and Virginia bluebells have been spotted, with the latter’s peak at Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve expected any moment. Similarly, Northern Ohio is joining the botanical celebration, with eagerness among visitors to witness the blooming of bloodroot, cut-leaved toothwort, and the early stages of Virginia bluebells' display.
