The Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners has advised residents against undertaking building projects without consulting industry professionals. This warning is aimed at preventing uncoordinated development and promoting sustainable growth within the state. According to the institute, proceeding with construction without proper consultation undermines the state’s development efforts and poses potential environmental and structural risks.
The NITP Chairman, Adefala Sogbesan, issued the advisory on Thursday during the NITP 2024 Annual General Meeting in Abeokuta, the state capital. During a panel discussion, key state executives highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to drive sustainable development initiatives across Ogun State. This year’s AGM theme is “Cross-Sector Collaboration in the Production and Implementation of Development Plans: The Imperative of Synergy Among MDAs.

In this part of the world, we tend to overlook professional consultation. For example, you may purchase land to build a school, but if the land is zoned for residential purposes, you could end up building in the wrong area simply because you didn’t consult experts.
” He added, “We selected this topic based on observations from some of our members. We felt the need to engage relevant departments and agencies, particularly those connected to the construction sector. This is why we invited heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, hoping to collaborate and advance sustainable development.
” The state Commissioner for Housing, Jamiu Omoniyi, speaking to journalists at the event, noted that all government MDAs are working in synergy to ensure development across the state. In his remarks, the state Commissioner for Urban and Physical Planning, Tunji Odunlami, cautioned that disregarding established building procedures jeopardises the state’s development..
