Unfortunately, this Saturday's intense matchup between No. 20 Clemson and Pitt was overshadowed by the officiating crew's incompetence. During the fourth quarter of action, the officials missed a clear false start on Pitt's offense in the red zone.
Fortunately for Clemson, that didn't end up being a costly mistake. The Tigers held the Panthers to a field goal to maintain their lead. Later in the fourth quarter, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik took a hard hit while attempting a pass.
Although it seemed like a brutal collision, it didn't seem egregious. The referees at Acrisure Stadium, however, threw a flag for roughing the passer. That call made Pat Narduzzi lose his mind on the sideline.
On the very next drive, Pitt quarterback Nate Yarnell got absolutely rocked in the helmet while standing in the pocket. It was the most clear unnecessary roughness penalty we've ever seen. And yet, it wasn't obvious enough to warrant an immediate flag from the officials.
Thankfully, common sense prevailed at the end of the day. After a lengthy discussion on the field, the refs threw the flag for this blow to the head. No idea how officials missed this blow to the head on the Pitt QB but after a huddle (and big screen replays) they called it pic.
twitter.com/b2ugxtOAhE ESPN's Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy haven't pulled their punches when talking about the officials this Saturday. The way they've handled this game is downright outrageous.
Hopefully, the ACC reviews what happened in Pittsburgh today and actually considers some form of action. Allowing these refs to continue going about their business would just be foolish. Icon Sportswire/Getty Images It's truly a shame that such an electric game featured such poor officiating.
