OKLAHOMA CITY — State officials broke ground Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, on a project to build an arch and amphitheater on the south side of the Capitol complex. The project, which lawmakers set $4.
3 million aside for, is expected to be complete within two years of construction beginning. Gov. Kevin Stitt signed House Bill 4012 last session to create the project and set aside funding.
It is meant to honor the 45th Division of the Oklahoma National Guard. “This arch will remind us of the battles fought, the lives given and spirit of those who wear the uniform,” Stitt said. “And I hope this arch will help inspire future generations to reflect on the price service members pay and the call to serve.
” Maj. Gen. Thomas Mancino said the project is an honor to veterans and members of Oklahoma’s National Guard.
He said the arch will serve as a focal point for future veteran ceremonies in the state. Rep. Ty Burns, R-Pawnee, chair of the House Veterans Caucus, served in the 45th Division and spoke at the ceremony.
“Every time a soldier gazes upon this arch, they’ll be reminded they’re a part of something far greater than themselves,” he said. “..
. This dedication and investment in honoring our veterans and National Guardsmen also sends a powerful message, a message that says Oklahoma stands firm on its support for those who defend our freedoms.” Other state leaders at the event included former Rep.
Mark McBride, R-Moore, and Sen. Brenda Stanley, R-Midwest City, who authored the legislation for the project. The amphitheater will seat around 100 people and the arch will be 30 feet tall and 60 feet wide.
The project also will include a veteran’s park..
