PETALING JAYA: All eyes will be on the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) executive committee election on April 19 for the 2025–2029 term, especially with the deputy president and secretary-general posts up for grabs as Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin and Datuk Nazifuddin Najib step aside. Tan Sri Mohd Norza Zakaria is expected to retain his position as the president for the 2025–2029 term after receiving 14 nominations from 34 affiliates, with no challengers stepping forward for the top post. This also paves the way for his third consecutive term, continuing the leadership he began in 2018.
The contest for the deputy president's role will be between Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) president and current OCM vice-president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad, and Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation (PLBM) president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz. Meanwhile, Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali is set to take over as the new secretary-general after winning the post uncontested, replacing Nazifuddin who is not seeking re-election. Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) acting president Datuk V.
Subramaniam secured the assistant treasurer post unopposed, along with Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) representative Datuk Ahmad Feisal Ahmad Tajuddin, who will take up the treasurer role. However, the official announcement of all uncontested winners will only be made after the OCM executive committee election takes place next Saturday. "Deputy president Tan Sri Hamidin has opted not to contest in this election, stepping down from his position, as has Datuk Nazifuddin.
As a result, new candidates will vie for these posts." “The official results will only be announced once the election is concluded,” said OCM Independent Election Panel chairman and Court of Appeal judge, Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril during a press conference to announce the list of candidates on Friday. Also up for grabs are five vice-president posts, with seven candidates in the running.
They are Datuk Chong Kim Fatt (wushu), Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan (sepaktakraw), Datuk Iruan Zulkefli (boxing), Gerard Monteiro (squash), Azizul Anuar Adenan (taekwondo), Datuk Paduka Mumtaz Jaffar, and Nurul Huda Abdullah (aquatics). At the same time, for this election, all affiliates casting their votes will be prohibited from bringing mobile phones to prevent any information leakage during the voting process. "I have served as a judge in general election petitions, and we found that some voters, upon arriving at the polling station, were instructed to vote for a particular party and promised a reward once they cast their ballots," said Firuz.
"After leaving the polling centre, these individuals admitted to voting and showed proof via pictures taken on their mobile phones. We aim to prevent such situations. "We want to limit, and if possible, eliminate issues like this (bribery and vote-buying).
While it is the responsibility of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to address this directly, we seek to control what we can," he added..
