Paul Charles Clarke has died at the age of 59 after suffering a heart attack. Opera Magazine first reported the news. Born in Liverpool, Clarke studied at the Royal College of Music, winning the 1989 Kathleen Ferrier Competition.

He went on to have a successful international career following his professional début with the Welsh National Opera. He performed at the Dallas Opera, Minnesota Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Royal Danish Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Seattle Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin; Seattle Opera, Salzburger Festspiele, Santa Fe Opera, and Scottish Opera. He also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in productions of “Die Fledermaus” and “Káťa Kabanová,” among many others.



Among the roles he was known for included Gabriele Adorno in “Simon Boccanegra,” Don Jose in “Carmen,” Macduff in “Macbeth,” Pollione in “Norma,” Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor,” and the title role “Benvenuto Cellini,” “Werther,” and “Don Carlos.” He also appeared in concert with many orchestras including the Orchestre National du Capitole Toulouse, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Philharmonisches Orchester Kiel, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Clarke recorded numerous works such as “The Bartered Bride” with Sir Charles Mackerras, “Faust” with David Parry and “Simon Boccanegra” Live from the New Zealand Festival.
