Musicologist and Puccini expert Michele Girardi passed away on March 22, at the age of 70.Girardi was born in Venice, Italy on May 3, 1954. He graduated from the University of Venice in 1980, and went on to teacher at the Parma Conservatory from 1984 to 1988 and at the Mantua Conservatory from 1989 to 1998.

He returned to the University of Venice where he was a professor of History of Music at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage. The final teaching position he held was associate professor of musicology and the history of contemporary music at the University of Pavia.His book titles include “Puccini, his life and his works,” “Puccini: His International Art,” “La Fenice 1792-1996: Theatre, Music and History,” co-authored by Anna Laura Bellina, and “Giacomo Puccini.



Between Fin de Siècle and Modernity.” From 2003 to 2015 he managed the periodical “La Fenice prima dell’opera” for Teatro La Fenice in Venice.He was awarded the “Massimo Mila” prize, given to the best monograph on music published in Italy between 1993 and 1996, for the Italian edition of this book, “Giacomo Puccini.

The international art of an Italian musician.” In 2021, the Municipality of Viareggio and the Puccini Festival Foundation awarded him the 49th Puccini Prize. In the centenary year of Puccini’s death, Saggiatore published a newly revised and expanded edition of “Giacomo Puccini.
