NZ to nearly double defence spending

NZ will nearly double its defence spending to more than $11 billion - or two per cent of GDP - over the next eight years.

New Zealand will boost its defence spending by $A8.3 billion over the next four years and nearly double its spending as a proportion of GDP to two per cent in the next eight years. Login or signup to continue reading New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon released the country's Defence Capability Plan on Monday.

"Global tensions are increasing rapidly and New Zealand has stepped up on the world stage, but our current defence spending is simply too low," he said. The plan contains $NZ9 billion ($A8.3 billion) of new funding over the next four years, aimed at boosting capability.
