Surat: Nylon weavers have requested officials on the textiles committee of the Union textiles ministry to visit the city to assess the impact of the introduction of the quality control order (QCO) for nylon. Appeals are also being made to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In a recent online meeting with textile committee officials at the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), nylon weavers raised several concerns.
After the implementation of the QCO for polyester, preparations are being made to introduce it in nylon. Though the share of nylon greige cloth manufacturing is small in comparison with polyester, the city accounts for the largest share of nylon yarn and greige cloth manufacturing in the country. Against daily production of four crore metres of polyester cloth, around 22 lakh metres of nylon is produced in the city.
"A few issues were discussed with textile committee officials at an online meeting and nylon weavers expressed their concerns. We hope solutions will be found soon," said Vijay Mevawala, president of the SGCCI. "The quality of yarn manufactured locally is not good enough to match imported yarn. It is not possible to manufacture good quality with poor quality yarn," said Vimal Bekawala, secretary of the Surat Nylon Weavers Association. "The yarn's performance during production is also a concern.
Further, locally manufactured yarn is not competitive against imported yarn on the pricing front," said Ashish Gujarati, president of the Pandesara Weavers Co-Op Society Ltd. "Disposal of the application for a BIS licence for foreign suppliers should be quick for nylon yarn. Good quality foreign yarn should be available to local weavers," said Gujarati.
