KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar has called on party members to give her the opportunity to fill the position in the upcoming party elections on May 24, as she seeks to continue championing the people's cause through political means. Speaking during the Borak Harini podcast at Balai Berita in Bangsar, Nurul Izzah acknowledged the challenge of being constantly associated with her father, Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. However, she hoped members would view her not merely as his daughter, but as someone who has been deeply involved in the party since its inception.
"I am offering myself with the hope that party members see me as part of the PKR family. I am confident that I can serve to the best of my abilities."Let's ensure that our best leaders across the country remain united," she said.
Nurul Izzah, who also chairs the Penang PKR Leadership Council, is one of seven candidates contesting for the three PKR vice president slots for the 2025–2028 term. The list includes current office bearers such as Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, federal ministers Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Chang Lih Kang, and Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. Also in the running are Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan and PKR deputy secretary general Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan.
Communications Minister and PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil had earlier expressed interest in contesting but has since withdrawn from the race.Nurul Izzah said her political mission remains focused on improving lives, particularly through poverty eradication and empowering grassroots communities via initiatives such as Kampung Angkat Madani and SejaTi Madani. She stressed the importance of staying connected to the grassroots and not relying solely on government positions to gain support.
"Holding positions in the cabinet or state government does not guarantee popularity among members. They have their own judgments and expectations," she said. She also emphasised the need for unity and empathy among candidates.
"We compete as one family. Win or lose, we must remain united and support the party's vision beyond the elections," she said. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
