MANILA – National University Nazareth School (NUNS) displayed its brilliant form Thursday, Feb. 20, to prevail over De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ), 117-61, in the UAAP Season 87 girls basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. Ashley Abong finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and one steal as the Lady Bullpups improved their record to 3-1 to stay in second place.
Gilas Youth guard Aubrey Lapasaran, Hasly Mallari, and Rebekkah Pascua delivered 15 points each for NUNS, which lost to University of Santo Tomas (UST), 69-75, last Feb. 6. Lapasaran had eight rebounds, six assists, and six steals, while Mallari hauled down 11 rebounds and Pascua had three rebounds and three steals.
Marielle Avila made 13 points on top of five rebounds, while KJ Badajos added 12 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals for the Lady Bullpups, who also clobbered the Junior Lady Archers, 86-44, in the first round. “As we said, the loss [against UST] was very important. It’s a blessing because it gave us a mindset that we should always be on our toes.
We can’t be too complacent and at the same time, we still have a lot to work on. There are a lot of things that we need to improve,” NUNS head coach Camilla Escoto said in Filipino. The Lady Bullpups dictated the tempo of the game from the start, taking the first quarter, 20-11, before posting a 53-36 lead at halftime.
Erica de Luna had 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and one steal for La Salle-Zobel, which absorbed its third loss against one win. Princess Cordero added 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while Sofia Martinez and Naima Navarro scored 10 points each. DLSZ will face unbeaten UST on Sunday while NUNS will battle winless Ateneo de Manila on Feb.
