A former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has called for a mass resignation of the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their roles in the defeat suffered by the party in the 2024 general elections. Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM, the former minister called for an exorcism of the party from what he described as demons occupying leadership positions. “All the executives must resign for leading the party to an unprecedented defeat; if the demons in the NPP are not removed from their leadership positions, the party will continue to suffer,” he stated.
He expressed disappointment in the governance of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, describing the former president as ‘unreceptive and close-minded.’ “Akufo-Addo turned a deaf ear to the many pieces of advice I gave him, which could have turned the fortunes around. His governance was so disappointing.
There are so many people behind the scenes in the NPP who love this country and could perform better but were sidelined by President Akufo-Addo,” he observed. The NPP suffered a significant defeat to the then-opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2024 election. The NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, won the presidency with 56.
55% of the vote, while the NPP’s then-Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured 41.61%. The NDC also gained a two-thirds majority in Parliament, winning 183 of 276 seats, compared to the NPP’s 88.
While the NPP remains in the process of reorganising after the defeat, there have been criticisms directed at key figures of the former government and party leaders for contributing to the loss.
