What a disaster. My daughter rang me just now to say she can see the smoke from their flat, which is not even close to Notre Dame! Going to cost a fortune to repair. More taxes for us.

Macron is there, as is the mayor of the 4th arrondssement. Hidalgo may be too far away to attend, but the fire brigade are worried about possible casualties so probably not needed. And there are helicopters for sure, my daughter says she can see them.

. I wonder if politicians just make things more difficult for the emergency services. I'd say that there's a lot of security with Macron and various security protocols to be followed.

Anne Hidalgo commented very early on, an hour or so ago - and what is your point in describing her as "Paris's Socialist mayor"? She is just the Mayor of Paris And you can't dump tonnes of water on a medieval building. It would bring the whole thing down. Dreadful to such an iconic piece of history disintegrating.

The roof was being renovated and the working theory at the moment is that it may have been due to that, although most medieval buildings have scaffolding somewhere on them all year around because they need constant work. That much ancient dry wood wouldn't take much to turn into an inferno. It's a tragedy that the building has been lost.

That kind kind of quality of workmanship throughout the building doesn't exist anymore really..
