.. That's what France24 is reporting.

Spire in flames now. Hillmanhunter1 said: Click to expand..

. Merde! The spire has fallen, and the whole roof is on fire. It looks as bad as it could be.

What a disaster. My daughter rang me just now to say she can see the smoke from their flat, which is not even close to Notre Dame! Going to cost a fortune to repair. More taxes for us.

Despite what the Catholic Church in Ireland would have people believe about secularism. Just been announced that the spire has collapsed. Still,we're going to spared Macron's Big Speech planned for this evening.

Small mercies and all that, Whatever the cause is it's an awful shame to see such an historic building on fire. Hopefully nobody has been injured. Where is Anne Hidalgo, Paris's Socialist mayor in this crisis? CNN saying fire brigade still not there.

Why arent they droping water from helicopters as we did in an Irish forest fire a while back? Some firemen on the roof now. The steeple just collapsed. Dame_Enda said: Where is Anne Hidalgo, Paris's Socialist mayor in this crisis? CNN saying fire brigade still not there.

Macron is there, as is the mayor of the 4th arrondssement. Hidalgo may be too far away to attend, but the fire brigade are worried about possible casualties so probably not needed. And there are helicopters for sure, my daughter says she can see them.

. I wonder if politicians just make things more difficult for the emergency services. I'd say that there's a lot of security with Macron and various security protocols to be followed.

It's a sad sight. My mother in law stayed in a hotel across the street, 300 Euro a night. Dame_Enda said: Where is Anne Hidalgo, Paris's Socialist mayor in this crisis? Click to expand.

.. Jesus wept, first you suspect a terror attack and then you start whining about the mayor being a socialist, which has absolutely zero to do with this dreadful event - do you ever take a day off? Anne Hidalgo commented very early on, an hour or so ago - and what is your point in describing her as "Paris's Socialist mayor"? She is just the Mayor of Paris And you can't dump tonnes of water on a medieval building. It would bring the whole thing down. Dreadful to such an iconic piece of history disintegrating.

The building is surrounded by extensive scaffolding - I'm wondering if this may be related. rainmaker said: Dreadful to such an iconic piece of history disintegrating. The building is surrounded by extensive scaffolding - I'm wondering if this may be related.

The roof was being renovated and the working theory at the moment is that it may have been due to that, although most medieval buildings have scaffolding somewhere on them all year around because they need constant work. That much ancient dry wood wouldn't take much to turn into an inferno. It's a tragedy that the building has been lost.

That kind kind of quality of workmanship throughout the building doesn't exist anymore really..
