Sunrisers Hyderbad (SRH) has been setting records through their aggresive batting, and captain Pat Cummins along with coach Daniel Vettori confirmed they have no plans to alter their approach. However, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ian Bishop believe the team needs a Plan B. Pujara criticized SRH for not being “smart” in their batting during their loss to Delhi Capitals on Sunday.

“Firstly I was really surprised they chose to bat first. When you’re playing an afternoon game, you know that the pitch will be slightly on the slow side, that’s when you normally prefer to bowl and that’s an ideal time to bowl, not an ideal time to bat.” Pujara said on ESPNcricinfo’s show“I thought they should have bowled first.

But talking about their batting, I think they go too hard and they were not smart enough today.” Pujara added.SRH faced a significant setback in the powerplay, losing their top four batsmen and finding themselves struggling at 37 for 4 following a challenging spell from Mitchell Starc.

However, their scoring rate remained steady throughout. Aniket Verma delivered an impressive performance, scoring 74 runs off 41 balls, which included five fours and six sixes. He formed a crucial partnership with Heinrich Klaasen, adding 77 runs off just 40 balls to support the team.

Despite their efforts, SRH’s lower order failed against DC’s spinners, ultimately finishing with a total of 163 runs.Bishop felt that Klaasen should have batted deeper as Aniket was in good form. He believed that SRH could still stick to their approach, but one player should take time to settle instead of batting aggressively from the start.

“I look at Klaasen’s dismissal, I think even Heinrich should know his power and if he was to stay and bat a little bit deeper, he will score at a huge tempo. It’s still early in the season, but they [SRH] have got to start understanding that if Aniket gets going, we can spend some time there with him as deep as we bat and just soak it up just a little bit more” Bishop said “It’s not to consolidate for five-six overs, but it’s just maybe to manage for about three, four, five bowls, maybe even an over, we’re not talking consolidation for long period.” Bishop added.

Pujara questioned the effectiveness of SRH’s aggressive batting approach if the results are not in their favor. SRH began their IPL 2025 season by successfully defending a massive total of 287 but suffered defeats in the next two games. The post ‘Not smart enough.
