Northeast Requires more Super Speciality Hospitals: Union Minister JP Nadda

Our Bureau The Northeast region needs more super speciality hospitals, said Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, , on Wednesday, even as he inaugurated key healthcare facilities in Assam. The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Nadda, visited the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), the Mangaldai District Civil Hospital, and AIIMS Guwahati to inaugurate new initiatives and review ongoing healthcare projects aimed at enhancing medical services for the people of the region. In the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister JP Nadda inaugurated the Library and Informatics Centre of the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) in Tezpur today.

It may be noted that the institute stands as one of India’s oldest mental health institutions and serves as a premier mental healthcare facility in the North-Eastern region. With the support of the central government, the institute has been modernised and elevated to meet higher standards of excellence. The newly inaugurated three-storey centre boasts an extensive repository of 37,766 books, complemented by 535 e-books, journals, and online periodicals, spanning diverse disciplines such as psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric nursing, neurosciences, and laboratory medicine.



These state-of-the-art facilities are expected to significantly enhance the institute’s research capabilities. Later, the Union Minister presided as Chairperson over the 11th meeting of the “Board of Governance” of LGBRIMH. Chief Minister Sarma also attended the meeting as Vice-Chairperson of the institute.

The need is “to introduce more super speciality departments to better serve the Northeast and the nation as a whole,” JP Nadda said there. Today’s event was attended by state Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ashok Singhal, MP Ranjit Dutta, and MLAs Prithviraj Rabha, Krishna Kamal Tanti, and Ganesh Limbu. JP Nadda also visited the Mangaldai District Civil Hospital in Darrang district, where he laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art 50-bed Critical Care Block.

The Critical Care Block, to be constructed with financial support of Rs 23.75 crore under the Prime Minister Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), will significantly improve access to advanced healthcare services for the people of Assam. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while thanking Union Minister J.

P. Nadda for presenting the people of Darrang district the critical care centre, said that the centre will be constructed with a financial outlay of Rs. 23.

75 core. He also said that 28 such critical care centres will be set up across the state. The Chief Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Darrang district is receiving unprecedented fillip for its development.

Apart from the Skill University, State government is going to set up a medical college and hospital in Darrang district. Moreover, with regard to connectivity, the entire stretch of NH 15 from Baihata Chariali to Tezpur will be made four-lane. The Chief Minister on the occasion said that the benevolence of Union Minister JP Nadda is visible as the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited in Namrup will be empowered with its capacity expansion for the production of fertilisers.

Once completed the move will likely to provide a shot in the arm to the fertilizer production facility. During his visit to Darrang, JP Nadda also inspected ongoing treatments at the cancer hospital and visited a cancer care project under Tata Trusts. “Earlier, people of Assam had to travel out of the state for cancer treatment, but now, the people of Darrang can receive their treatment right here at home,” he said.

Union Minister Nadda also visited to inspect and review the progress of work at the institute. He planted a sapling on the campus of the premier hospital and took stock of the activities being carried out there for providing better and world-class facilities and treatments to the people.
