Senior Gavin Grell punctuated a successful Saturday for Northampton Area High School’s wrestling team . The heavyweight recorded a pin in 30 seconds to seal the Konkrete Kids' 38-33 victory over Quakertown in the first-place match of the Parkland Winter Duals. Quakertown posted three wins in a row (all by fall) to take a 33-32 advantage entering the last bout.
All of Northampton’s winners recorded bonus points: Brayden Wenrich (pin at 114 pounds), Ryan Marano (technical fall at 121), Colin Marano (tech fall at 127), Gabriel Ballard (pin at 133), Trey Wagner (major decision at 145) and Parker Williams (pin at 160). Williams' fall gave the K-Kids a 32-15 advantage through nine bouts. Both squads won six-team pools to reach the first-place matchup.
In Pool B, Northampton defeated Bangor (47-16), Delaware Valley (Pa.) (53-20), Northwestern Lehigh (52-12), Boyertown (37-22) and West Chester Rustin (52-20). In Pool A, Quakertown defeated Abington Heights (53-14), Southern Lehigh (55-16), Upper Perkiomen (59-18) and La Salle College (45-27).
The Panthers lost to Parkland 37-24. In the other placement matches: Boyertown defeated La Salle College 47-20 for third place; Parkland beat Northwestern Lehigh 35-33 for fifth place; Abington Heights topped Bangor 37-34 for seventh place; Delaware Valley handled Upper Perkiomen 53-21 for ninth place; and Southern Lehigh defeated West Chester Rustin 39-16 for 11th place.
