NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — North Myrtle Beach leaders removed longtime City Manager Mike Mahaney Sept. 19 after council members said he refused to hire a grants coordinator. Mahaney, who held the position for 14 years, has been replaced by Assistant City Manager Ryan Fabbri, who is serving as acting city manager.

"I'm here because I love it, and I'm very proud of what we've accomplished," Mahaney said, speaking while council members were in a closed-door session discussing his employment. "The things we accomplished here, in my opinion, have changed the face of North Myrtle Beach forever." North Myrtle Beach's City Manager may be out of a job.

Mahaney technically has been placed on administrative leave until council members make a final decision about his employment, but city officials said the vote was the first step in forcing him out of the job . Council voted 5-2 to remove him, and the notice of removal states that the decision stemmed from Mahaney not moving to hire a grants coordinator "despite being urged to do so by multiple members of City Council on or about February 21, 2024, and February 22, 2024.

" Mahaney was first hired as city manager in 2010. Before that, he served as city manager in Deerfield Beach, Fla., Kannapolis, N.

C., and St. Mary's, Ga.

He also served as county administrator of Nassau County, Fla., according to his resume. Myrtle Beach pastor J.

Outside of public records, little has been released about the reasons for Mahaney's ouster. "Prolonged efforts by some members of City Council to work out, through communications with the City Manager, the terms of a dignified exit arrangement for the City Manager, were not successful," according to the resolution that removed Mahaney. "The City Council desires to formally conclude its employment relationship with City Manager Mike Mahaney as soon as possible.

" Neither Mahaney nor City Council members would comment after the meeting. Horry County Schools seeks public's help in search for next superintendent While on administrative leave, Mahaney will not be allowed to perform any of the city manager's duties unless specifically directed by the mayor, according to city records. He also cannot access his office or communicate with any city employees regarding city manager duties or his employment unless directed by the mayor.

Mahaney is allowed to request a public hearing within five days, or he could also submit a written reply to city leaders within that time. If a hearing is requested, it would be held at a City Council meeting between 20 and 30 days after the date the request is received. Then, the removal would need to be stayed pending the outcome of the public hearing, according to state law.

The person in that role manages the city's business and implements the council's plans and orders. The manager makes recommendations to City Council about issues such as capital improvements, employment, finances and policies. The manager also keeps the council informed of the city's business and responds to complaints and concerns, according to the city's website .
