The Northumbria Police initiative is aimed at combating knife crime, focusing on the confiscation of dangerous weapons, locating wanted offenders, and educating young people on the dangers of carrying knives. Known as 'Operation Sceptre', the initiative begins today (Monday, November 11) and will run until Sunday (November 17). Throughout the week, knife surrender bins will be available at several Northumbria Police stations, providing a safe and anonymous way for the public to dispose of knives.
Chief Superintendent Joanne Park-Simmons, Northumbria Police's Knife Crime Lead, emphasised the force's commitment to eradicating knife crime. She said: "Prevention is one of our key priorities, and central to this is educating younger people on the dangers of becoming involved in this type of criminality – and changing attitudes towards carrying weapons. “The activity this week, very much builds on the work we carry out throughout the year with our partners to combat knife crime.
“This is not something policing can tackle alone – everyone can play their part in keeping our region safe. “I’d call on everyone, if you think someone you care about is becoming involved in knife crime, to please speak to them about the dangers of doing so and the serious consequences." Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth echoed the call for proactive action. She said: “Carrying a knife makes you likely to use it – and that has consequences. Too often we have seen lives lost, futures destroyed, and families left heartbroken.
” Knife surrender bins will be available at the following Northumbria Police stations for the duration of Operation Sceptre: Northumberland: Alnwick, Bedlington, Berwick, and Hexham Wallsend: Middle Engine Lane station Newcastle: Etal Lane and Forth Banks stations Gateshead South Shields: Millbank station Sunderland: Southwick station The public is encouraged to report any information on knife crime incidents through Northumbria Police’s social media channels, website live chat, or the "Report" pages online.
