North Augusta Forward hosting first Taste in the Tunnel in support of public art initiatives

The Greeneway mural by local artist Jason Craig has been up at the Center Street tunnel since late June, and the North Augusta organization that promoted this first foray into public art for the city’s beloved trail is now hosting an inaugural fundraiser at the tunnel in support of future public art initiatives. North Augusta Forward’s “Taste in the Tunnel” event is Saturday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.

m., at the North Augusta Greeneway Center Street tunnel. Avery Spears-Mahoney, executive director for North Augusta Forward, said people are invited to both experience the mural and to enjoy good food, live music and some college football.

Tickets, available on North Augusta Forward’s events page , are $50 each. Attendees are requested to get their tickets by Sept. 24.

Included in the ticket price are an oyster roast by JC's Seafood and charcuterie from The Grove (formerly, Town Square Olive Oil and Wine); live music from Joe Stevenson; and college football shown on Austin Taylor Insurance's Gameday Trailer. There will also be a cash bar. Spears-Mahoney said “Taste in the Tunnel” would be rescheduled if there’s rain, so check up on event status via NAF’s Facebook page .

“Taste in the Tunnel” comes just a little over a week after North Augusta Forward celebrated five years in hosting Third Thursdays in downtown North Augusta. A ribbon cutting for it was held June 25.

Craig is shown at center with North Augusta Forward executive director Avery Spears-Mahoney. “It certainly does not feel like it was five years ago when I sat with a handful of downtown business owners and began planning Third Thursday,” Spears-Mahoney said. “It has been a great way to showcase our local businesses and allow the community a place to gather and make memories.

” Since then, North Augusta Forward has expanded on its efforts to engage people with downtown: Spring Fest , Tinseltown Forest and the Cocoa Cookie Crawl (this last in conjunction with the city’s annual Tree Lighting) have been added on as ways to bring people through downtown and “help our Merchants Alliance members thrive,” Spears-Mahoney said. She then added this addendum: “Support local first!”.
