NEW DELHI: Finnish Nokia Friday unveiled a manufacturing facility for 5G receivers, Wi-Fi routers and fiber-to-the-home termination devices, and expects to ship nearly 10 million devices every year, and create as many as 3,000 direct jobs. "We are looking at about 10 million devices per year, and ramping very quickly to support large volumes per month and per year," Sandy Motley, President - Fixed Networks Business Group at Nokia told ETTelecom. The fixed network product line would be commercially manufactured in a collaboration with homegrown Dixon Technologies at its Noida electronics production plant.
Advt In May this year, the two companies entered into a partnership for localised fixed wireless devices manufacturing. "In this Dixon factory, we will be able to bring about 3,000 jobs to the area. So that's certainly quite exciting," Motley said, adding that the company has a long way to go to connect everyone to the critical fiber technology.
Pekka Lundmark-headed telecom gear maker said that it anticipates close to 10 million home broadband connections with 4 to 5 million fixed wireless access (FWA) subscriber growth annually. India's 5G FWA broadband subscriber homes are expected to touch 100 million in the next five years, overtaking the US. Currently, nearly 40 million homes are connected in the country.
Oil-to-retail conglomerate Reliance Industries' JioAirFiber has recently become top WFA provider worldwide, and eyes to bring as many as 1 million subscribers to its network every month. Bharti Airtel's Xtream AirFiber, a Jio's rival, however, is planning to shift FWA offering to 5G Standalone (SA) by December 2024. The top executive said that telecom service operators are driving the demand for fixed wireless access products in India, and Nokia would be able to produce up to 10 million devices a year to support its customers that also include internet service providers.
Advt The Finnish company said that it is open to expand partnerships in future, but presently focussing on to locally produce optical network terminals with WiFi capabilities and FWA products that includes 5G outdoor receivers, in-home Wi-Fi routers and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) termination devices. "We also have a lot of design work that goes on in Bengaluru R&D centre for optical long-haul networks." Nokia also maintains a telecom network equipment manufacturing facility in Chennai for 4G and 5G radios and optical line terminals for domestic and overseas markets.
