NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia Wednesday said it has deployed its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered MantaRay self-organising network (SON) solution in Vodafone Idea ’s 4G, and soon-to-be-launched 5G network pan-India. The solution will optimise more than 1 million 4G and 5G cells, making it one of the largest SON deployments globally, said Nokia, adding that the solution will enable high-capacity and energy-efficient connectivity for the telecom operator’s customers. MantaRay SON uses advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms and self-configuring modules to autonomously enhance network performance and operational efficiency.

Unlike traditional manual methods, MantaRay SON continuously learns and adapts, autonomously analyses network traffic patterns, detects anomalies, and optimises resources without human intervention. Advt The SON conducts an average of 7,00,000 autonomous changes per day within Vi's network, according to Nokia. This deployment is part of Vi’s multi-year 4G modernisation and 5G network gear procurement deal with Nokia signed recently.

The telco has similar deals with Nokia's Swedish rival Ericsson , and South Korea's Samsung . To recall, Vi had signed deals worth $3.6-billion with the three vendors.

“By harnessing AI, we are transforming our network operations to be more sustainable, agile, energy-efficient, and are delivering best in class service to our consumers. We are ready for the challenges of the digital future and its demand especially as we offer 5G services,” said Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Vodafone Idea Limited. “By using Nokia’s AI-powered MantaRay SON solution, Vi is equipped to set a new standard for network operation efficiency and customer experience in one of the world’s largest mobile markets,” said Tarun Chhabra, Senior Vice President & Country Head, Nokia (India).
