1 2 3 Pune: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) on Friday confirmed that toll charges won't be increased on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway till April 2030. Officials, however, clarified that the old Mumbai-Pune highway would see a toll increase from next April, as the last increase was implemented in 2023. "The toll collection formula for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was determined in April 2004 and the last revision was implemented in April 2023.
According to our current policy, the rates will remain unchanged for the next five years as was announced in the notification issued," a senior MSRDC official said. With National Highways Authority of India-operated toll plazas announcing a rise in toll from April, the MSRDC-operated eway would not see any hike in charges, the official clarified. As per NHAI guidelines, toll rates undergo an annual revision on April 1.
The increase is calculated based on inflation and other cost factors, with heavier vehicles facing a steeper rise as compared to other vehicles. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway sees a daily traffic of around 1.40 lakh vehicles, while the old Mumbai-Pune highway witnesses a daily traffic of nearly 50 lakh vehicles.
Commuters have welcomed the announcement. "This is an excellent development for regular travellers like me," Sunil Patil, a businessman who travels between the cities twice every week, said. "With rising fuel costs, at least the toll expenses will remain unchanged for the next five years," he added.
The 94km Mumbai-Pune Expressway was inaugurated in 2002. It remains one of India's busiest highways, connecting the state's financial capital with its cultural and educational hub.
