No sign of flip-flops and knotted hankies among the Watford players

When the season is all but over and games are played in warm sunshine, players can sometime be guilty of looking ahead to their summer holidays.

However, while Watford didn’t return from the West Midlands without any points on Saturday, they at least showed some fight and rallied well after both of West Brom’s goals. There don’t appear to be any knotted hankies or flip-flops in the dressing room, and having reduced the arrears Watford showed a desire to try and get a point in the closing stages. “Absolutely that, and I thought the reaction after the first goal showed the same,” said Tom Cleverley.

“They are a team that will never give up and we appreciated the applause from our fans at the end. “I’m glad the fans saw our response because they were excellent for us today. “The players understand they are judged on every training session and in every match by me, by the staff, by the supporters, by themselves.

“We have equalled last year’s points tally, and we want to significantly improve on it to show progression.” However, there were times throughout the game where spells of possession around the Albion box led to nothing. Edo Kayembe’s four shots gave him the highest return of any Watford player on Saturday, but given the time they spent with the ball the final product felt limited.

“There is a fine line between taking wild shots and not, but Edo had a go and hit the woodwork today, and he did it again in the week,” said Cleverley. “It does feel we’re in a bit of a moment like that at the minute, where things are going just the wrong side of the post or the bar for us. “We will always want to finish our attacks with a final product.

“Now we don’t want that to be a shot from 35 yards with our weaker foot but we understand we have to have more final product. “I think what we have to understand is that sometimes we don’t need to be playing perfect football. “I thought we had good appetite to run in behind today with Mamadou and Moussa, and we just turn that pass down because we want to play through the lines.

“That is where I can certainly help, because we don’t have to score the perfect goal. “We need to play more effective football.” • After the game, Cleverley confirmed that although he wasn’t involved at The Hawthorns on Saturday, Kevin Keben will be available over the Easter period.
