The Late Late Show will go on hiatus for the week ahead of Paul Mescal’s appearance on the Friday night chat show next week (Friday 15). The RTÉ One show runs every Friday from 9.35pm throughout autumn and winter but host Patrick Kielty confirmed there would be no show airedon Friday, November 8.

Last week saw Patrick joined by fellow comic Des Bishop, Golden Globe nominated actors Colm Meaney and Paul Reisner and legendary singer Christy Moore — who talked to Patrick about his latest album, A Terrible Beauty. At the end of the show, the Down native confirmed: ‘We’re not here next week, but we’ll be back on Friday the 15th with the star of Gladiator II Paul Mescal.’ During the week, a social media call out was made by the Late Late Show team for audience members for Paul’s appearance on the show.

The Maynooth native returns to Ireland on Friday for the Irish premiere of the highly anticipated sequel of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. Paul stars alongside Pedro Pascal and will play the role of Lucius, who is the son of Maximum — played by Russell Crowe in the first film. It comes as filming legend Pedro Pascal praised his Irish co-star for helping him ‘light up’ scenes on the set of Gladiator II.

. Pascal — who stars in the historical film as Roman General Marcus Acacius — admitted during an interview on Heart FM that shooting the blockbuster was ‘unlike anything’ he’d ever experienced on a film set before, despite being a well-known face in the industry for some decades. The actor said: ‘I think ships and the fireballs and the fortified wall and Paul Mescal — they help with lighting up the opening sequence! But it was an unbelievable thing.

‘That was the first thing that I shot, and I think it was the first couple of days of actual shooting for the movie.’ The Julia Roberts flick Notting Hill will air instead of the Late Late Show on Friday. The rom-com sees Hugh Grant star alongside Roberts, who plays a famous actress who falls in love with a bookstore owner on Notting Hill.

If that’s not to your liking, and you’re more of a thriller/action fiend, RTÉ 2 will show Ridley Scott’s 2007 American Gangster, which stars Russell Crowe alongside Denzel Washington. The film is a loose remake of the criminal career of real life gangster, Frank Lucas, who smuggled heroin into the United States of America. Alternatively, Ireland vs New Zealand will broadcast, live from Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, on Virgin Media One.
