Ludhiana: With police not being able to trace the accused in an FIR registered last year over 23 school buses and vans having fake registration plates, the complainant in the case has written to director general of police Gaurav Yadav, urging him to ask traffic police to mention all details of the offender, such as address and mobile numbers, from now on. On Aug 17, 2023, on a complaint by RTI activist Ajay Sharma , the secretary of regional transport authority (RTA) had filed a complaint with Division VIII police station, leading to the FIR. The FIR was lodged under sections 472 (making or possessing counterfeit seal etc with intent to commit forgery) and 473 (making or possessing counterfeit seat etc with intent to commit forgery publishable otherwise) of IPC.
Sharma said an RTI filed by him revealed that in 2018, traffic police issued challans to 850 school vehicles. Of these, 23 vehicles had fake numberplates. These numberplates were, originally, of two-wheelers and light goods vehicles.
Sharma said it was a matter of concern that authorities could not trace the drivers and even schools. “Most importantly, the name of schools which allow these buses to ferry students should also be mentioned,” he added. In all, 23 unknown persons were originally fined by traffic police of Ludhiana under various offences while they were plying school buses.
While the challans were issued, the name-address credentials pertaining to the offenders and the names of the schools, which basically own or outsource operations of such vehicles, was not mentioned on the challan book. Therefore, the FIR was registered without an accused.
