Town hall bosses in Trafford say there have been no applications for street closures for parties to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE [Victory in Europe] Day on Thursday, May 8. The authority asked for eight weeks’ notice for applications but says it will look to accommodate applications if any come in. Meanwhile, the council has helped to organise two events for VE Day.
On Saturday, May 10 there will be a celebration of the end of the Second World War in Europe in the Trafford Centre at The Orient Stage and ‘horseshoe’ area. Together with the Trafford Centre, the Army Charity and the council, an afternoon tea will be served by the mayor of Trafford, Cllr Amy Whyte and invited military guests. A band will perform on stage during the event, and there will be displays by the Veterans Living History Museum.
On Sunday, May 11, at a time yet to be confirmed, there will be a service to commemorate VE Day at St Paul’s Church, Sale which the mayor will also attend. The events are to commemorate the unconditional surrender of Germany after five years of war ending in 1945. Allied forces included those from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Poland and the Soviet Union, now Russia.
