IOWA CITY — Third-ranked Iowa kept its dual winning streak alive against No. 7 Nebraska by winning the final two matches in an 19-16 victory Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa has won 16 straight duals against the Huskers, with NU’s last win coming in 2005.

NU hasn’t won in Iowa City since 1937. Nebraska took a 16-9 lead with two matches left after Lenny Pinto at 174 pounds and Silas Allred at 184 defeated higher-ranked opponents. But then Stephen Buchanan, No.

1-ranked at 197, pinned Camden McDanel in the final seconds to pull Iowa within 16-15, then Ben Kueter shut out Harley Andrews at heavyweight to give the Hawkeyes the dual win. NU never trailed until the end as Caleb Smith opened the dual with a 2-1 decision at 125. Smith rode out Joey Cruz in the third period as Smith’s decisive point was for riding time.

Brock Hardy got a major decision at 141 before a showdown match between Nebraska’s Caleb Lovett, ranked second at 149, and fourth-ranked Kyle Parco. Lovett led 1-0 in the third period before Parco recorded a takedown with 1:20 left. Lovett escaped but wasn’t able to score the rest of the way as Parco won 3-2.

Parco has won all three meetings with Lovett the past 12 months. The three wins have been by a total of four points. Millard South grad Antrell Taylor then won a 4-2 decision at 157 as he got a takedown with 40 seconds left.

NU’s lead was 10-9 when Pinto earned a wild win at 174 pounds. Pinto got a near-fall and another takedown midway through the first period for a 10-1 lead on sixth-ranked Patrick Kennedy. But Kennedy got a near-fall of his own and Pinto’s lead was 11-9 after one period.

Pinto was up 11-10 in final seconds of the match when he recorded another near-fall in earning an 18-11 win. Silas Allred followed with a 4-1 sudden victory over previously unbeaten Gabe Arnold at 184. That gave NU a 16-9 lead before Iowa rallied.
