2 Christopher Newport (26-2) split a doubleheader against No. 14 Randolph-Macon (23-3) in a showdown of Division III powers in Ashland, losing 4-1 before winning 5-1.In Game 1, R-MC ended CNU’s 13-game winning streak, scoring three runs in the first inning and prevailing behind pitcher Gracie Ellis (13-0), who outdueled Jamie Martin (10-2).
Sammy Drew’s homer in the seventh brought in CNU’s only run.In Game 2, Kate Alger pitched a five-hitter and struck out eight. Candace Slaw scored four runs and batted 2 for 3.
Brooke Greaver, who homered, and Meredith Brickner drove in two runs apiece.Towson (17-18, 6-7 Coastal Athletic Association) shut out Hampton 8-0 in a series opener, thanks in large part to the host Tigers’ seven-run third inning. Amanda Medina (6-4) shut out the Pirates (11-21, 3-10), while HU’s Leah Maduro (1-6) pitched all four innings but took the loss.
GOLFUVA’s Sambach 12th entering final round at AugustaVirginia player Amanda Sambach was tied for 12th place at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, ensuring she made the 36-hole cut for the third consecutive season.Sambach shot 2-over 74 in the second round and finished the first 36 holes at 3-under 141 at on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. She was six strokes behind leaders Kiara Romero of Oregon and Lottie Woad of Florida State.
Following the second round, the 72-player field was trimmed to the top 30, including ties, for today’s final round. All 72 players enjoyed a practice round at Augusta National on Friday.Sambach tied for 14th at this event in 2023 and 2024.
HONORSCNU’s Shaw, Gibbs make USA South hallFormer Christopher Newport men’s soccer coach Steve Shaw and distance runner Aimee Gibbs were named to the USA South Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.Shaw coached the Captains from 1996-2018, and Gibbs was a cross country standout from 2000-03. They became CNU’s 18th and 19th hall honorees in CNU’s previous conference.
Gibbs remains the only runner to win the USA South individual title in all four years of her career, and she’s the only CNU woman to qualify for the national meet four times.Shaw took the Captains to a 319-110-37 (.724) record and was an eight-time USA South Coach of the Year and four-time Region Coach of the Year.
He also was a Spanish professor at CNU who served communities around the world.They and other inductees will be celebrated Aug. 3 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
