Here are the unofficial results of a special New Jersey election held on Wednesday, Sept. 18, to determine who will fill the U.S.

House seat that had been held by longtime Rep. Donald Payne Jr., who died in April .

Payne , a longtime Newark leader and a member of a New Jersey political dynasty who spent the last 12 years serving in Congress as the successor to his late father, passed away after being hospitalized for several weeks in the wake of a heart attack. The Democrat, who was also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, was 65 years old and still in office representing New Jersey’s 10th congressional district when he died. The district covers parts of Essex, Hudson and Union counties.

The contest to replace Payne features heavy favorite LaMonica McIver , a Democrat who serves as president of the Newark City Council, and her main opponent, Republican Carmen Bucco , who owns a small business. Also vying in the race are two independent candidates — Russell Jenkins and Rayfield Morton . McIver won a crowded and sometimes contentious primary election on July 16 — which included 11 candidates seeking the Democratic nomination — while Bucco was unopposed for the Republican nomination.

The winner in today’s special election will serve out the remaining 15 weeks of Payne’s unexpired term. Democrats have a considerable electoral advantage in New Jersey’s 10th congressional district. President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both carried the district in the 2020 and 2016 presidential races with more than 80% of the vote.
