At the most recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo showed off the GameCube Classic Controller alongside GameCube emulation for the Nintendo Switch 2 . However, some fine print has revealed that the new controller may only be usable with the GameCube games. A trailer released by Nintendo UK (skip to 2:17 to see the fine print) revealed that the controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube Games on the Nintendo Classics service (Nintendo also revealed that the Switch Online Classics name would be shortened to Nintendo Classics.
) VGC , who initially spotted the limitations in the fine print, pointed out that similar statements were made about the other classic controllers released by Nintendo. However, they are still usable with other Switch titles. Although things could change considering its new hardware, it is a sign of hope that the GameCube controller could be functional with modern titles.
However, the lack of a second shoulder button might be a fun challenge to work around. For now, this means that the iconic controller (that turns 25 next year!) will only be able to work as intended with the GameCube titles used on the Nintendo Classics service and will not work for other Switch 2 titles. One reason this is significant is that Super Smash Bros.
fans love the iconic (and quirky) controller for its ergonomic design, which makes it easy to use during gameplay, especially in a competitive and fast-paced setting. If the new controller is a bit too expensive to justify the purchase, Nintendo also shared on its website that the GameCube Adapter will work in TV mode with the Switch 2 using one of the USB ports. So far, Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero: GX, and SoulCalibur 2 will all be available at launch when the newest system in the Nintendo family releases this summer.
