Nintendo, Pokemon File “Palworld” Lawsuit

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have reportedly filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer of the video game “Palworld” reports Filed in Tokyo District Court, the lawsuit is reportedly after an injunction against infringement and is seeking compensatory damages on the grounds that the “Palworld” game “infringes multiple patent rights.” In a statement, they say: “Nintendo will continue to take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights, including the Nintendo brand itself, to protect the intellectual properties it has worked hard to establish over the years.” “Palworld” debuted in January via Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, snagging a stunning 25 million players in just its first month.

It also immediately drew criticism for being “Pokemon with guns” and boasting character designs that seemed very similar to Pokemon characters. However, as the lawsuit is a patent suit, not a copyright suit, the outlet suggests the complaint is targeting gameplay inventions as opposed to character designs. Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe has previously claimed that “Palworld” had cleared legal reviews.
