The initiative, which follows the first playground opened last year in Seoul’s Geumcheon district, aims to create an inclusive community space where people can enjoy sports regardless of gender, physical ability, or age.
The new facilities in Gangnam transformed two aging basketball courts located in Gaepo-dong East Neighborhood Park and Gaepo-dong West Neighborhood Park. The court in Gaepo-dong Neighborhood Park was renovated and optimized for 3×3 basketball, maintaining its original function while receiving a design overhaul. The court in Gaepo West Park was reimagined as a versatile space where local residents can experience various sports activities.
“The Gangnam Playground for All focuses on helping children discover the joy of physical activity through play and sports, building confidence while leading healthy and happy lives,” a Nike representative explained. To support this mission, Nike plans to regularly operate “Active Modoo,” a program launched in 2022 that encourages children to develop a sense of belonging and confidence through sports while nurturing their potential. The project also emphasizes Nike’s commitment to sustainability.
Through its “Recycling & Donation” program, the company repurposed donated shoes and clothing to create park benches and storage facilities. The spaces feature nature-inspired graphics that bring vitality to the area while harmonizing with the park environment. “We hope ‘Playground for All’ becomes a local landmark where both children and adults can enjoy sports activities,” said Cho Sung-myung, head of Gangnam District.
“We will continue to expand public-private ESG partnerships to enhance cultural and athletic facilities and improve residents’ quality of life.” Lina Jang ([email protected]).
