You don't need to be a culinary whizz to whip up this comforting treat . Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson might be known for her eclectic pantry contents and avant-garde dishes . But sometimes, the 64-year-old likes to keep things simple.

In fact, her go to staple is probably something you've had time and time again. In an interview with The Times earlier this year, the acclaimed food writer admitted she'd broken one cardinal sin..

. She bought supermarket sliced bread, aka 'plastic bread'. "I know Nigel Slater always says don't get it and that it's disgusting and slimy, but actually it isn't," she confessed.

"I felt like I had to come clean, because I have often said don't use supermarket sliced bread but in the right circumstances you absolutely can." Nigella isn't using her Hovis loaf to rustle up a quick sandwich though, she's combining it with the children's classic Laughing Cow cheese to make a convenient bread and budder pudding. Intrigued? So are we.

.. Nigella Lawson's bread and butter pudding recipe Ingredients (serves 4) 500ml Milk - not fridge temperature 50g Caster sugar - plus an extra tsp 30g Unsalted butter, softened - plus more for greasing 4 tsp Golden syrup 21⁄2 tsp Vanilla extract 21⁄2 tsp Demerara sugar 6 Medium-sliced Hovis white bread 6 The Laughing Cow Original triangles 4 Large free-range eggs - not fridge temperature 1 Small unwaxed lemon - zest finely grated Method Spread the Laughing Cow cheese onto your bred (one triangle per slice) then sprinkle one teaspoon of caster sugar over three of the slices.

Divide the lemon zest over the same three slices and sandwich the bread together with the three remaining slices ( so you have three sugar, lemon, and cheese sarnies). Grease an oval baking dish with butter and cut each sandwich into four triangles and arrange them in the buttered dish. You can get creative at this stage, placing some of the crust down or some of them with the crust facing up.

Crack the eggs into a measuring jug and add the caster sugar and vanilla extract before whisking together by hand. Pour in the milk while whisking gently and then pour it all over the sandwiches once fully combined and aerated. Want big news with big heart? You can use this waiting time to re-base the sandwiches with the milky mixture. Sprinkle the demerara sugar over the top and bake in the oven for around 35-40 minutes. The custard should have set and puffed up, creating a pale gold top.

Allow the dish to stand for around 10 minutes before serving. If you want, you can drizzle over a little bit of syrup over each portion. Et voila! There you have it, a simple yet tasty delicious approved by Nigella herself.

"I think my next plan is to make a bread and butter pudding with Marmite in and a bit of cheese on top," the star added. "I like food that isn't restaurant-fancy. I want something that is basic and not recherché.

But you take a mouthful and you think 'that is so good'." Do you have a story to share? Email us at [email protected].
