Nicola Coughlan has criticized J. K. Rowling for celebrating the recent UK Supreme Court ruling on transgender women, which has outraged the transgender community

Nicola Coughlan has publicly slammed J. K. Rowling for her reaction to the controversial UK Supreme Court decision regarding transgender rights.

The court ruling, which emerged earlier this week and denies legal recognition of transgender women as women in equality law, has caused a stir within the transgender community and beyond . Meanwhile, the Harry Potter author, 59, was seemingly delighted with the decision. Rowling shared her thoughts on social media platform X on Wednesday, lauding "three extraordinary, tenacious Scottish women with an army behind them" for getting their case heard and championing "the rights of women and girls across the UK.

" Coughlan, 38, didn't hold back her disappointment. On Friday, via Instagram Story, the Bridgerton star expressed disdain for Rowling's anticipated Max show, commenting, "Keep your new Harry Potter lads," and "Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole," Following this, she posted a video voicing her deep concern over the verdict. She related to her audience: "To see an already marginalized community be further attacked - and attacked in law - is really stomach-turning and disgusting," while also noting, "And to see people celebrate it is more stomach-turning and disgusting.

" Coughlan paired her message with content from The Cut, implying that Rowling's open satisfaction with the court's decision marks "a new low." The website lambasted J. K.

Rowling, saying: "Of course, this kind of behavior is nothing new from Rowling, who has long perpetuated harmful myths about trans people." They continued with a searing critique: "But celebrating the erasure of an entire group of women in such self-indulgent fashion feels extra evil, even for her." Meanwhile, Rowling herself toasted to 'For Women Scotland,' posting a photo with two glasses of bubbly and the caption: "Think I might be having a cigar later.

" In a landmark decision, the UK's high courts stated that under the 2010 Equality Act, 'woman' and 'sex' must be understood as referring to biological women and sex. Yet, the court was clear in stressing that this interpretation "does not remove protection from trans people," acknowledging their right to non-discrimination based on gender reassignment. In closing, they expounded that legally recognized transgender females are not to be deemed 'women' for equality legislation purposes.
