Vadodara: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited ( NHSRCL ), which is executing the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project, announced the payment of Rs 20 lakh ex gratia to each of the families of the three workers who were killed in an accident at a construction site in Anand district on Tuesday evening. Four workers had got trapped when a temporary structure made of steel and concrete blocks at a construction site for the bullet train project collapsed at Rajupura village near the Mahi river, close to Vasad town. After the four workers were extricated, three were declared dead and one was shifted to hospital for treatment.
On Wednesday, there were reports that the fourth worker, who was being treated at SSG Hospital in Vadodara, had also succumbed to his injuries. NHSRCL officials denied these reports. "He is still undergoing treatment at hospital and is recovering well," an NHSRCL official said.
Anand police on Wednesday handed over the bodies of the three victims to their families after postmortems were carried out at Shree Krishna Hospital in Karamsad. The three deceased were Ranjit Yadav, who was from Bihar; Prahlal Barida from Panchmahal district, and Kanu Dahya Solanki, who was from Vasad. Solanki's relatives and family members conducted his final rites on Wednesday afternoon.
NHSRCL officials said they are conducting a technical inquiry to ascertain the cause of the accident. Officials said it occurred during the sinking process for one of the wells in the Mahi river. Some 610 metres of wells had to be sunk, of which 582m was completed.
On Tuesday, work on the remaining 28m in three wells was in progress. For these, 2.5-tonne concrete blocks were loaded on a frame for sinking, which was supported by high-tension strands.
"According to the design, 16 strands were provided. Due to the snapping of strands, the concrete blocks fell and the four workers got trapped," an official said..
