Newton Basketball Teams Suffer Losses at Dallas Center Grimes, Boys Wrestling goes 1-2 at Home

The Newton boys and girls basketball teams struggled with poor shooting and turnovers and lost a conference doubleheader at Dallas Center Grimes Tuesday night. Both teams put up their lowest point totals of the season. The Cardinal boys lost to Dallas Center Grimes 73-31.

Newton trailed 17-4 after the first quarter and 38-16 at the half. In the second half, Dallas Center Grimes outscored Newton 35 to 15. Caden Klein’s eight points paced the Cardinals.



Creighton Andrew added seven while Cade Bauer and Dawson Maki each added six points. The Newton boys are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Newton girls lost to Class 4A #8 Dallas Center Grimes 67-17.

The Cardinal girls only managed two free throws in the first quarter and trailed 23-2 as the second quarter began. Newton’s first basket came with just over 6:30 left in the second quarter. The halftime score was Dallas Center Grimes 42 Newton 8.

The Mustangs led 57-11 at the end of the third quarter. Off the bench in the second half, Newton freshman Addyson Cibula led the Cardinals with six points. Senior co-captain Alexis Garvis added four points.

The Newton girls are now 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Newton boys and girls basketball teams will welcome Pella to Newton High School this Friday night. The Dutch boys are 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Pella’s girls are 6-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Both games can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream with pre-game coverage at 5:45 p.m.

The Newton Boys Wrestling team went 1-2 at a home quadrangular Tuesday night. The Cardinals opened the meet by losing to Norwalk 75-6. Kent Montgomery’s win by fall at 106 pounds accounted for Newton’s only points.

Newton then beat Southeast Warren 48-30, and lost to #4 Carlisle 64-14. The Newton boys wrestling team’s next meet will be an Invitational in Pella this Saturday..
