A Newport pub has been given a five-star hygiene rating. The Pen and Wig on Stow Hill was given the highest rating by food safety officers following an inspection on February 6. The pub was praised for its "very good" hygienic food handling and "very good" management of food safety.
The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were rated as "good." The food safety officer has confidence that the high standards will be maintained in future. The Pen and Wig's manager, Tomos Young, said that this was the third time in a row that the pub has received a five-star rating.
The Food Hygiene Rating Act 2013 became law in Wales on March 4, 2013, and requires all businesses selling food to display hygiene ratings in a prominent place and provide the information verbally if requested over the phone. Inspections are carried out by local authority officers and ratings range from zero, meaning urgent improvement is necessary or risk closure, to five, meaning standards are excellent. Each inspection is carried out under three categories—hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and the management of food safety.
The hygienic food handling category covers preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage. The cleanliness and condition of facilities and building category includes having the appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control. The management of food safety is defined as the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in the future.
Businesses have the right to appeal against ratings. Ratings are updated on the Food Standards Agency website. The Pen and Wig is open from 10am to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 10am to midnight Friday and Saturday and 11am to 11pm on Sunday.
