A prison officer has broken a British bench press record. Zoltan Mihalyi, a prison officer from Newport, displayed exceptional strength at the WRPF South West Qualifier powerlifting competition on Sunday, March 30. Organised by the 349 Barbell Team, this event paved the way for Mr Mihalyi's qualification for the Nationals later this year and the European Arnolds Classic in Madrid, Europe's largest multisport event.

He began with the squat, lifting 275kg, 300kg and a personal best of 310kg. In the bench press, despite slight shoulder discomfort, he started with 165kg, moved to 175kg and then set a new British record with 183kg on his third lift.



The final challenge, the deadlift, saw Mr Mihalyi lift 275kg and 295kg. For his last lift, he aimed for 307.5kg to reach the 800kg total.

With a total lift of 788kg, 53kg more than last year and personal bests in squat and deadlift, he secured the top spot in the UK rankings and fifth in the world. Mr Mihalyi said: "Since July last year, I have been on a relentless path of preparation, overcoming every obstacle with unwavering determination.

" He also expressed gratitude to those who had supported him along the way, including the Vectis weightlifting club head coach Mick Snudden and his sports therapist and chiropractor, Dr Abi Mackett from the Newport RMA Sports Injury Clinic.
