Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams sent a letter to a federal judge Monday, pressing to expedite his trial on corruption and bribery charges. Adams’s attorney, Alex Spiro, submitted a formal request to the federal judge overseeing the case, asking for the trial to begin on April 1, according to The Associated Press. Spiro pointed out the urgency of an earlier date, citing Adams’s right to a speedy trial and the need for an undistracted campaign season.

“An earlier trial date will ensure that Mayor Adams’s speedy trial rights are upheld, that the Mayor will be able to fully participate in his reelection campaign and that this city’s voters can be rid of the distraction of this misguided indictment as they hear from and evaluate the Democratic candidates for mayor on their merits,” Spiro wrote.
